7 Girls with Vitiligo on Why They’re Thankful for Their Spots

Anonymous

It takes strength to live with vitiligo, there’s no doubt about it. And it takes even more strength to find a silver lining in what might otherwise seem like an emotionally painful and often unforgiving disease. Yet in this time of thanksgiving, we’re encouraging our community to reflect on the good that comes from living with vitiligo – because that’s what we’re all about.

“Living Dappled” is about a change a heart. It’s about choosing happiness, seeking courage and building confidence, spots and all. And with that in mind, we asked seven girls with vitiligo why they’re thankful for their spots. Here’s what they said.

Lizzy Holt | Vancouver, Canada | Dappled Darling for 22 years
My spots have allowed me to be accepting of all people. I have a sensitive heart, make sure to smile at strangers, love encouraging people and enjoy making people laugh. Ultimately, they’ve made me who I am today and I didn’t turn out so bad.

Erika Page | Washington, D.C. | Dappled Darling for 21 years
Vitiligo has taught me that life is more than skin-deep. It’s given my life meaning by changing its course in a way I could have never predicted but am so thankful for.

Tiffany Posteraro Grant | Brooklyn, New York | Dappled Darling for 20 years
I am thankful for my spots because I believe my spots have made me a better person. I see the beauty in other people’s “flaws.” I believe they helped me grow into a nonjudgmental, empathetic and caring person.

Alison Denbow | Chicago, IL | Dappled Darling for 24 years
Struggling with a disease like vitiligo has really helped me to live life with an open heart and mind – it’s taught me empathy. I understand that everyone is different and unique in their own way. It’s allowed me to embrace my best qualities and be thankful for all the good I do have. Yeah the disease sucks, I in no way love my spots, but I have come to be thankful for the type of person it has made me.

Sandra Reese | Long Island, NY | Dappled Darling for 16 years
I’m thankful for my vitiligo because it made me grow into the brave and strong person I am today.

Sarah Olmstead | Atlanta, GA | Dappled Darling for 16 years
I am thankful for my spots because they have taught me how to accept differences and have shown me that I have it in me to be true to who I am and what I stand for.

Alicia Roufs | New Prague, Minnesota | Dappled Darling for 40 years
My spots have influenced my life for the better because I’ve been able to help people who have struggled with vitiligo for years. I’ve been a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, a voice of reason and hopefully an inspiration to people with vitiligo.

Are you thankful for your spots? Tell us why in the comments below.

    • Anna, home was my safe place growing up too, and I remember having trouble at school. I didn’t like thinking that the other kids were staring at me or thinking I’m weird. So you aren’t alone. I’m in my twenties now and I feel a lot more confident – sometimes it takes time. I’ll send you an email so we can chat more!
