Introducing ‘Dear DermFriend’—Expert Answers for Your Vitiligo Questions
For so many of us living with vitiligo, getting clear, trustworthy answers can feel harder than it should be. Between confusing online information, outdated resources, and rushed doctor visits, it’s easy to feel like you’re left piecing things together on your own.
That’s why we’re so excited to introduce something new—an ongoing way for our community to get expert-backed guidance from a dermatologist who truly understands vitiligo and the skin we’re in.
The Barrier to Vitiligo Care: Access to Accurate, Easy-to-Understand Information
If you’ve ever Googled vitiligo, you know the experience can feel like a rabbit hole of confusing, outdated, and hard‑to‑understand information. You might find medical jargon that assumes you’re a doctor, articles that don’t list an author or update date, or pages that barely mention the newest treatments. Perhaps you book an appointment with a dermatologist, wait weeks for your appointment, and still don’t get the answers you need. You didn’t have time (or the courage) to ask all the questions you wanted, or the doctor didn’t have the latest information.
If that feels like part of your experience—you aren’t alone. And, it’s not just you.
A recent study showed that the average reading level of online vitiligo resources was 10th grade, far above the average U.S. adult reading level of 6th grade—meaning most content is simply too complex to be truly helpful. Plus, only a fraction of sites even acknowledged recently approved treatments or mental health resources people with vitiligo often need. Additionally, research* shows that 57-61% of patients with vitiligo struggle to get accurate information about their condition from their dermatologist.
This experience isn’t just overwhelming—it’s a real barrier to care. And when it’s hard to get trustworthy answers about your vitiligo, it becomes harder to feel confident making decisions about your skin and your health.
That’s why we’re building something better for this community in partnership with experts who are here to help.

A quick but important note before you submit: Dear DermFriend is designed to share trusted, dermatologist-approved education—not to replace care from your own doctor. With this in mind:
- All questions must be related to vitiligo and/or its impact on your health and wellness.
- Because our resident derm expert isn’t able to see or examine you, she can’t diagnose conditions, prescribe treatments, or review photos or medical records.
- We encourage you to submit general questions about vitiligo that can help the whole community learn.
- For your privacy and clarity, questions may be lightly edited, and not every submission will be answered.
- If something feels urgent or concerning, your personal healthcare provider is always the best place to turn.
